Title

Plants Eat Too?!

Problem Scenario

This experiment could help future or current green thumbs with getting their flowers, veggies, and fruit quicker than usual.

Broad Question

Does soil type affect plant growth?

Specific Question

What type of soil do plants grow best in?

Hypothesis

The plants will grow best in fertilized soil.

Variables

Independent Variable: Soil Type
Dependent Variable: Plant Growth
Variables That Need To Be Controlled: Room Tempurture, Sun Amount, Water Type, Water Amount

Vocabulary List That Needs Explanation

plant growth-the hight and speed in which the plant grew.

General Plan

My General plan, is to get three different types of growing soil, and three of the same flower seeds, and plant them. I will water them every two to three days, and give them plenty of sunlight. I need to make sure that the Room tempurture in which I grow the plants in is at a constant temp. of seventy three degrees fare and hight.

Potential Problems And Solutions

Plants Dying, Lack of Sunlight, Room Tempurture

Safety Or Environmental Concerns

Sunlight, Room Tempurture

Detailed Procedure

Step 1: Go to plant store
Step 2: get fertilized soil, plant seeds, sand, dirt, and flower pots
Step 3: Go home, put the soils into the pots, and water them every three days
Step 4: measure each plants over all growth

Conclusion

Does soil type effect plant growth? I'll tell you. Soil type is definitely key during growing and planting flowers, veggies etc. My hypotheses was that the Basil plants would grow best in the Fertilized Soil. Although my hypotheses theory was correct, the potting soil I used also was just under that of the plants with Fertilized Soil.

Discussion

As I was growing my Basil in my three types of soil( six plants in all), I had realized that once the first one to two weeks, the plants started to really get going with their growing. Some problems i had during the experiment, was both the lack of sunlight and lack or overdose of water. The soil type definitely had a very strong effect on the growth because both the potting soil and the fertilized soil had nutrients in them, as to the sand which started to get growing, but died soon after mainly due to lack of nutrients, water, and sunlight. The one thing I would have changed if I could have, would have been growing another plant for each soil types.

Benefit to Community and/or Science

To help gardeners and green thumbs in the community grow veggies, flowers, or fruits.

Background Research

  • Room temperature effects plant growth
  • sunlight effects growth efficiency
  • water type and amount will decrease plant growth

Abstract

Have you ever been in the rush to grow a plant, or wanted a vegetable as soon as possible, or even a flower? I have good news for you! Fertilized Soil, or even regular Potting Soil would be the best choice. I grew 6 plants, 2 for each soil type, and overall, the four plants with the Fertilized Soil and Potting Soil grew the quickest and most efficient( of course with plenty of water, sunlight and tending)!!!
